Stormwater Management

Every time it rains, runoff from our yards, streets, parking lots, rooftops etc. erodes, dissolves, and transports dangerous substances. These substances include pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, de-icing chemicals, spills of fuel, and residues of lubricants and tire wear from vehicles. Illegal dumping of trash and debris also contributes to this type of pollution, all which can end up in our creeks, streams, ponds, and river.

What is the NPDES Phase II Program?
The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program is designed to educate the public and effect a change in the way we conduct our daily activities with an eye towards improving the quality of the water that flows into bodies of water. This will help improve the water quality in our creeks, streams, rivers and lakes.

Why is the program important?
Water is vital to our health, and the health of the plants and animals that share the earth's resources with us. It then follows that clean water is good for us, wildlife and plant life.

Where did the program come from?
The framework and reporting requirements of the program are Federal Law and were handed down to local communities from the United States Environmental Protection Agency through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). However, the structure of the program within the local community is designed by the community itself and is tailored to the types of activities occurring within the community. The Village is responsible for implementing the program it has designed and the IEPA conducts periodic audits of our performance to ensure that the programs is being properly administered.

What can you do to help?

Realize that each of us has an impact on the quality of the water that we send downstream. Get involved, take the time to learn how you can do things better and change those behaviors and practices that degrade water quality to minimize the effect you have. Frequently referring to the NPDES website and reviewing the information presented here are great places to start.
